Wednesday, December 17, 2008

West Vancouver, BC:   The District of West Vancouver would like to congratulate Kevin Pike, Director of Parks and Community Services, as he retires on December 19th after 19 years of serving the citizens of West Vancouver.  Kevin’s career spans 38 years and four different municipalities – the City of Edmonton, North Vancouver Recreation Commission, the City of Vancouver, and West Vancouver.  Kevin has left a legacy of community benefits through creativity and leadership in the development of partnerships, environmental stewardship, arts and culture, and facilities.

Throughout his tenure, Kevin has been committed to developing partnerships and involving the community in decision making.  He was instrumental in forging a partnership with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority at the new Community Centre, and in the formation of a non-profit society that will oversee the governance of the new Community Centre and Aquatic Centre in partnership with the District.

Kevin has promoted and supported environmental initiatives and stewardship with both staff and the community.  During construction of the Gleneagles Community Centre and then at the Community Centre Civic Site, Kevin urged and advocated for the incorporation of a geothermal heating/cooling system.  Departmental environmental stewardship achievements include the development of the Environmental Strategy, the Pesticide Bylaw, and the Environmental Developments Permits to protect riparian areas.

Kevin has also been instrumental in the development of an enviable cultural community.  The Harmony Arts Festival, the Ferry Building Gallery, and the District’s Arts and Cultural Strategy are a tribute to Kevin’s creativity and forethought.  In addition to receiving numerous awards, Kevin implemented the Recreation Facility Master Plan, and directed the development of the Civic Youth Strategy.

Kevin is a mentor to many as he engaged staff in meaningful ways, and worked closely with Mayor and Council to meet the community’s needs.  As a result, Kevin led innovative programs, encouraged an entrepreneurial spirit, delivered a high level of service, and was committed to community engagement.  Staff will miss Kevin Pike’s humility and humour as he embarks on his next adventure.
