Safeway Site Proposal Update
Tuesday, June 21, 2011
West Vancouver, BC: At its June 20 meeting West Vancouver Council considered a staff report on the outcome of the initial community consultation on the redevelopment of the Safeway site, located at 1650 Marine Drive. Council has requested that the applicant come forward with a comprehensive community engagement program.
Mayor Pamela Goldsmith-Jones says: “The public meeting on March 10 pointed out two things: most people recognize the potential for improvements of a rezoned Safeway site, and the community wishes to be involved in the process for its design. Council completely agrees.”
The Ambleside Village Centre Strategy policies are supported in West Vancouver’s Official Community Plan to support a vibrant and diverse local economy that enhances our quality of life. The Ambleside Village Centre Strategy supports diverse housing options, arts and culture, with a focus on revitalizing Ambleside and West Vancouver’s unique waterfront.
Report recommendations which were adopted by Council include:
- The specific redevelopment proposal for 1650 Marine Drive (the Safeway site) that was presented at a community consultation meeting on March 10, 2011 not be considered further; and
- As redevelopment of the Safeway site would contribute to the revitalization of Ambleside Village Centre and as it appears that the public consultation demonstrates support for the redevelopment of the Safeway site, the owner is encouraged to:
(a) carryout a community engagement program that informs a revised development proposal;
(b present a proposed community engagement program to the District for comment prior to initiating the program; and
(c prepare a revised redevelopment proposal, that is informed by the community engagement program, for District and community consideration.
