Media Release - Council Takes an Important Step Towards Renewing Ambleside
Thursday, March 08, 2012
West Vancouver, BC: At a special Council meeting on March 6, Council unanimously (with Councillor Booth recusing herself from the vote due to a potential conflict of interest) approved the execution of the proposed agreements to sell the District-owned lands on the 1300 Block (south side) of Marine Drive to Grosvenor Capital Corporation. Council received over 200 public submissions on the proposed agreements and recognizes that this is an important piece of land for the entire community. This approval in no way confirms what might be built on the site, including the height, density, form or design, but does provide for Grosvenor to come forward with a development application within six to nine months.
Mayor Michael Smith says, “This is an exciting time for West Vancouver. We have a good deal, a solid buyer in Grosvenor and a community that is totally engaged in what will be built on the 1300 Block. What Council voted on enables a full public consultation to take place on an application to revitalize a key area in our village centre.”
Over 2011, Grosvenor held a series of Ideas Fairs to involve the public and get feedback on the future redevelopment of the site. In the coming months, Grosvenor will prepare rezoning plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of the full block and engage West Vancouver citizens and business owners in the review of the same.
During the public engagement process, Council received many comments related to the future public safety building. In the coming months, the District will launch a public engagement process on the public safety building to present project preferences, collect public input, confirm funding and advance this much needed project.
