Media Release - Council approves noise exemption for new food store at 1650 Marine Drive (former Safeway site) to allow for extended work hours

Tuesday, October 16, 2012, West Vancouver, BC – District of West Vancouver Council recently approved a development permit for major renovations at 1650 Marine Drive (the former Safeway site). The developer is working to bring a new food store, which will be called Fresh St. Market, to the site as soon as possible, with a projected opening at the end of November.
“We are committed to revitalizing Ambleside,” says District of West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith, “and a new food store at the old Safeway site is an important part of that process. Many of our residents are seniors who need an accessible food store within a short distance from their homes and we are pleased that the developer aims to provide this service within such a short timeframe.”
In addition to building upgrades, residents will also see an improved parking area and enhancements to public pedestrian areas, particularly along Marine Drive and 17th Street. Because this is a renovation rather than a redevelopment, no rezoning was necessary to move the project forward. Due to short timelines, District of West Vancouver Council worked with the developer to ensure that the renovation would meet municipal guidelines and be able to proceed in a timely manner.
At last night’s Council Meeting, an exemption to the Noise Control Bylaw 4404, 2005 was passed to allow construction to occur outside of the District’s regularly allowable times. The exemption was requested to allow for timely completion of the project and to have the new store open on schedule. On weekdays, crews may work two additional evening hours until 7:30 p.m.. On Saturdays, crews may work for one additional hour until 6:00 p.m.. No work will be permitted on Sundays and holidays. This exemption carries through until November 30, 2012.
The property and business are owned by H.Y. Louie Co. Ltd, a prominent Metro Vancouver company since 1903.
