Engineering & Transportation

The Engineering Division is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods and the provision of services in West Vancouver. The division is responsible for:

  • construction, operation and maintenance of roads and sidewalks
  • collection and disposal of residential waste
  • a safe and continuous supply of drinking water
  • sewage, storm drainage and flood protection

The division undertakes infrastructure management planning and an extensive capital program each year, operates the Blue Bus Transit system, provides technical expertise for municipal infrastructure projects and provides GIS and mapping services for staff and the public.

Roads & Transportation

The Roads & Transportation Department maintains more than 250 kilometres of paved roadways in West Vancouver by providing:

  • large construction project management
  • maintenance and repair of pavement, curbs and sidewalks
  • maintenance and repair of street signs, traffic signals and street lights
  • vegetation management and snow removal
  • The department oversees transportation planning for West Vancouver. This includes traffic calming projects, cycling routes, sidewalks and school safety. Long-term planning includes a Strategic Transportation Plan and the transportation section of the Official Community Plan.

The department manages a fleet of 80 vehicles and 50 pieces of major equipment. It provides maintenance services for the District’s Parks & Community Services Division, West Vancouver Police Department, West Vancouver School District, and the provincial Ministry of Environment, as well as fleet assistance to West Vancouver Fire & Rescue.

Water & Sewer

The Utilities Department provides water, sewage, storm drainage and flood protection, all of which protect the health of residents, property and the environment.

The department maintains drinking water quality and monitors water as it flows through a network of pipes and pump stations. The department also maintains sewer mains and the individual house connections from the main to the property line.

Engineering Services

The Engineering Services Department is responsible for:

  • the collection, disposal and recycling of residential waste. This includes recyclables, yard trimmings, compostable waste (via the Green Can Program) and garbage for single family homes.
  • Geographical Information Systems (GIS) through WestMap, an online mapping service providing information on property, legal lots, service locations, aerial photographs and more.
