Storms and power outages

Seasonal storms often bring heavy rain and high winds to the North Shore. Severe winds can blow down trees and branches, causing power outages, road closures, and traffic disruptions.

Report an outage

If you lose power, first check BC Hydro's Outage Map for a list of reported power outages and estimated repair time.

If your area isn't listed on the Outage Map, report an power outage by contacting BC Hydro at 1-888-769-3766, *HYDRO (*49376) on your mobile device, or report it online:

Downed power lines

If you come across a downed or damaged line, always assume they are live, even if they're not sparking or making any sound. Follow these steps if you see a downed or damaged power line:

  • Stay back at least 10 metres (33 feet). That's about the length of a city bus.
  • Dial 9-1-1 and let them know that a power line has fallen or is damaged.
  • Keep others in the vicinity at least a bus-length away

Be prepared

Heavy rainfall

  • Help prevent flooding by keeping catch basins and drainage areas around your property clear.
  • Please slow down and drive carefully. Heavy downpours can cause water pooling on roads.
  • Stay clear of rivers due to quickly flowing water and potentially unstable riverbanks.

Power outages

Every home should have an emergency plan and kit to help you and your family get through the first 72 hours of a power outage.

You might think that you have everything you need, but it is important that your items are organized and easy to find. Would you be able to find your flashlight in the dark? Do you have non-perishable food once the food in your fridge goes bad?
