About the project

West Vancouver Place for Sport is a partnership between the District of West Vancouver (the District) and West Vancouver Schools (WVS) to replace the existing deteriorating track and poorly draining grass field at West Vancouver Secondary School (WVSS) with a new track and lit artificial turf field.

This new sports facility will include a six-lane track, and an artificial turf field with lighting, long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault, and shotput, with training areas for discus, hammer, and javelin throwing. Washrooms at West Vancouver Secondary School will be renovated as part of the project and be open to the public outside of school hours to accommodate the facility.

Construction details

April 9 update

Extended work hours will be permitted at the West Vancouver Place for Sport construction site, from Thursday, April 18 until Saturday, June 29.

Work is scheduled to take place outside of regular construction hours to reduce congestion during school drop-off and pick-up times and help ensure student safety. In addition, extended work hours will allow the District to take advantage of contractor availability and favourable weather conditions. Please be aware that work carried out by the District is exempt from the Noise Control Bylaw 4404, 2005 which regulates construction noise.

Heavy truck traffic due to West Vancouver Place for Sport construction is expected to ease by mid to late April 2024. We recognize the disruption and impacts to residents in the area due to the work and we appreciate your patience as we complete this project.

Work from Thursday, April 18 to Saturday, June 29 will include:

  • construction vehicle and truck traffic, Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • on-site construction, including heavy equipment use, concrete trucks, concrete form work and use of concrete finishing equipment such as power trowels, Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Saturdays, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

On-going impacts from November 27, 2023, for approximately six months will include:

  • temporary no parking or public vehicle access on 17th Street, between Inglewood Avenue and Kings Avenue, 24 hours a day/7 days a week
  • temporary no parking on the north and south side of Inglewood Avenue, east of 17th Street to accommodate truck access and egress
  • temporary closure of the large paved parking lot, located north of the Inglewood Learning Centre, south of the track during hours of construction (the lot will be open outside of work hours)
  • there will be no vehicle access from Kings Avenue to 17th Street
  • there will be no pedestrian access on the west side of West Vancouver Secondary School, between Inglewood Avenue and Mathers Avenue
  • construction vehicle and truck traffic in the area (trucks will use Heavy Truck Routes to and from the site)

Hours of construction: Work will take place Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Saturdays, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Construction signage and traffic control personnel will be on-site to assist with pedestrian safety.
