Keith Road to 3rd Street Multi-Use Pathway
The District will be constructing a multi-use pathway along the north side of Highway 1, between Keith Road and the south end of 3rd Street.
The north side of Highway 1 between Capilano Road and Taylor Way currently has a paved shoulder area that cyclists and pedestrians use to ride and walk between 3rd Street and Keith Road, adjacent to Hugo Ray Park. A formal multi-use path will be constructed here to improve safety, mobility, and accessibility through this corridor.
This new route will complete a link in both the pedestrian and bike networks, allowing easier access for residents and visitors to the Capilano Pacific Trail, as well as to areas north and south of the highway.
As part of the project, a number of trees will require removal from the Provincial Right-of-Way. Prior to any tree removals, a bird nesting survey will be complete in order to confirm that no active nesting is disrupted by this project.
In order to maintain the existing volume of vegetation and aesthetic of the area, the District will be completing a comprehensive replanting of trees and other landscaping vegetation. The District continues to work with our partners at the Ministry of Forests to ensure all work occurs in accordance with relevant legislation and regulations.
Construction will occur alongside Highway 1 within the area that is already sectioned off with concrete roadside barriers.
The District has been coordinating with the Ministry of Transportation to ensure impacts relating to the access of equipment and materials do not impact through traffic.
Cyclists and pedestrians should plan to take alternate routes during the construction period to avoid the excavations and equipment working in the area.
Crews will complete tree removals in late July and early August. Once complete, the District’s contractor will begin construction of the pathway. The expected completion date is early October 2019.
