Image
The image is a close-up, overhead shot focusing on a person's tattooed hands arranging small objects on a large, flat, grey, oval-shaped rock. The rock is wet, and the water appears to be shallow, surrounding the rock in places. The surface of the main rock is textured with small, dark speckles and has a somewhat rough appearance.

Explore the magic properties of ochre! Caitlin ffrench will teach you how to transform ochres (mineral pigments) into colour on cloth and threads. You will learn how to gather and process mineral pigments to paint onto cloth (and threads!) using soy milk as a binder. You will leave the workshop with a cotton square that you’ve painted. Suitable for ages 10 and up. All materials will be supplied.

Caitlin ffrench is an artist and educator who works with wild-gathered mineral and plant pigments from within the land bases she visits. ffrench works with wildcrafted pigments as a way to find the connections between place and memory. Her work explores parallels between her grief for the loss of landscapes and her grief for her body being disabled by multiple sclerosis. She completed a Master of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University and has been an artist and lecturer in Febre at the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary. She also teaches at Emily Carr University.
