The image shows a hand holding an open sketchbook, displaying a watercolor painting of a mountain landscape. The sketchbook is bound with black spiral wire. The painting itself depicts a dramatic mountain range with sharp, jagged peaks rendered in dark grays, purples, and blacks, suggesting shadows and rock formations. Some lighter tones indicate highlights and snow patches on the upper slopes.

Enjoy experimenting with a variety of drawing materials to learn how to create simplified expressions inspired by the landscape in this playful workshop. Jane Appleby will guide you through methods she uses as part of her creative process, encouraging openness to your own creativity. Suitable for all levels. All supplies will be provided.

Supplies included: 8.5″ x 11” white paper, support for paper with a clip or tape, pencil, pen, wedge sharpies, pencil crayons, conte/pastels, watercolour, and coloured paper.

About the artist:

Image
The image depicts a woman, identified as Jane Appleby, a visual artist, engaging in an art demonstration outdoors. She is positioned to the left of the frame, facing the viewer with a warm smile. She has short, graying hair, and is wearing a sleeveless dress with a vibrant, abstract floral pattern featuring hues of purple, pink, blue, and white. A delicate silver necklace adorns her neck. She is holding a paintbrush in her right hand, pointing it towards an easel that stands to her right.

Known for her lyrical brushwork and bold use of colour, Jane Appleby’s art offers expressive movements to enjoy. She is inspired by the rhythms and patterns of nature and often sketches or paints on location. Her original acrylic or oil paintings can be seen at various galleries, including Mountain Galleries in Whistler, Banff, Jasper and Lloyd Gallery in Penticton.

Jane received 2nd Place in the McMichael Art Museum’s Virtual Plein Air Competition in the canvas/panel category, and her painting, “Galiano Shoreline” was featured in the online exhibition. She has exhibited her work internationally and has been sharing her inspirations on YouTube, and through workshops locally as well as overseas.
