Ambleside Skatepark Mural

This call is open to individual artists or artist teams with a demonstrated ability to execute large-scale outdoor murals. Artists must be available to complete the mural during the specified dates. 

• Artist or artist team must reside in the Lower Mainland or Sea to Sky Corridor (Lions Bay to Mount Currie). 
• A connection to West Vancouver is preferred either through residency, a relationship to the community, or previous artwork that reflects the community spirit and diversity of West Vancouver, the geography from mountains to sea, natural elements, and/or outdoor experiences. 
• Artist or artist team must have demonstrated experience and skill sets working with multiple project stakeholders. Previous relevant projects may include indoor and outdoor murals, large-scale paintings, public projects, commissions with comparable budgets, and arts-based community engagement.

• Have ongoing communication and collaboration with District Cultural Services staff regarding artwork development and installation. 
• Participate in a community engagement workshop with users of the skatepark to learn about the culture of Ambleside Park and elicit input on the art mural concept and design. This will be supported by District staff. 
• Design and complete the mural by September 2025 at the latest. 
• The selected artist or artist team will be required to sign an Artist Agreement which states the artist/team fully understands and accepts the terms and conditions of this Call.

Please submit the following items. 

1. Artist contact information including name, mailing address, email and telephone number. Artist teams please include name and contact information for all team members. 
2. Brief introduction of the artist outlining artistic approach and relevant experience, including artistic achievements, education/mentorship and large-scale commissions. Previous experience in outdoor art murals is an asset. 
3. Resume or CV outlining previous professional experience.
4. 5-10 high-resolution images of recent related artwork/projects (include a numbered image list with title of artwork, date, medium, dimensions, location, and brief description). 
5. Three references that can speak to works/installations previously completed. Please include each reference’s name and contact information and how they relate to your work (project coordinator, curator, client, etc.)

The total budget for this project is $15,000 encompassing all expenses related to the mural creation, including artist fees, draft drawings, installation costs (such as paint supplies, labour, and equipment), artist administration costs, insurance, Maintenance Plan, and contingency. 

The budget estimates an approximate artist fee of $7,500, to be adjusted accounting for variable factors such as community engagement and complexity of design. 

The selected artist/team will create a finalized, detailed design and detailed budget for approval by the Selection Panel. 

The District will be responsible for site preparation, including wall cleaning and primer.

The artist is expected to participate in, at minimum, one community engagement workshop with users of the skatepark and Ambleside Park to learn about the culture of Ambleside Park and elicit input on the art mural concept and design. 

The District will organize and promote the workshop(s) and work with the artist on the format. The approximate duration of the workshop will be 90 minutes. 

The artist will be expected to incorporate key elements from the workshop(s) into the final design but will retain creative control over the final design to be submitted to the Selection Panel for final approval.

Artwork will be installed on the concrete wall and brick sidewalls of the Ambleside Skatepark (see image below). The wall measurements are approximately: 

• Grey wall left: 18.3 feet wide x 7 feet high 
• White wall centre: 36 feet wide x 8.2 feet high 
• Grey wall right: 28 feet wide x 7.5 feet high with curve at the end

The selection process will be undertaken by a Selection Panel. The Panel will review for artistic merit, creativity, demonstrated experience as well as availability for the timeline. Shortlisted artists will be invited to a short interview with the Selection Panel.

The following timetable outlines the anticipated schedule for the selection process and project award. The schedule is provided for information only. 

Timing may vary and the District will ultimately determine the timeline of events. 

• Call to Artists closes: March 19, 2025 
• Review of submissions: April 2025
• Project Award: end April 2025
• Project completion: by September 2025

The District reserves the right, without prejudice, to reject any or all submissions in whole or in part, to waive technical defects, irregularities and omissions and to determine, in its own best judgement, the proponent best qualified to undertake this contract, if, in so doing, the best interests of the District will be served. 

The District reserves the right to terminate the contract without notice due to non-performance and unsatisfactory services. 

The District reserves the right to call in alternate services if the proponent is unable to provide the service contracted. 

The Selection Panel reserves the right to be the sole judge of the acceptability of any proposal, and also any alternative proposed, and to purchase the service/product which, in its opinion, most closely meets the requirements of the District. The decision of the Selection Panel shall be final and without recourse.

Submission of a proposal will not guarantee an invitation to participate in any future contracting process. The District reserves the right to accept or reject any or all proposals. Criteria for evaluation includes all information requested. Interested persons or firms shall be responsible for all costs associated with preparing their submissions.
