District creates new Environment Committee to help address climate change

A new Environment Committee has been created for the District, as announced by Mayor Mark Sager at the May 8, 2023, Council meeting.

“It is with real enthusiasm that I announce the creation of the District’s new Environment Committee, something that is very important for the future health and longevity of our beautiful community,” shared Sager. “We know that there are many people here in West Vancouver who are concerned about climate change, and who want to take action and find solutions. This committee is a way to make sure that these voices are heard, and that there is a mechanism for active community involvement.”

The new Environment Committee will hear and learn from people of all ages, including youth. Whether through education, science, or technology, young people are scaling up their efforts and using their skills to accelerate climate action. To reflect this and their innovative ideas and contributions, the new Committee will have two seats for youth ambassadors. By adding youth to the membership, it will ensure this demographic is heard and involved.

The Committee will have a diverse membership, with experience in many areas of climate change and environmental conservation. This will provide a permanent source of expert knowledge to test new ideas and get feedback, which in turn, will help keep the District on track with its climate action goals.

As the District develops its community-wide Climate Action Strategy, it plans to hit the ground running on its implementation with the support of this Committee. This approach will help position West Vancouver as one of the leading communities on climate action and actively involve residents and stakeholders in these efforts.
