2026 marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day, an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. Held on the summer solstice (June 21), this important day holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous Peoples, marking a time of renewal, connection, and celebration.

Here are some ways to engage in and celebrate Indigenous culture and traditions, with some taking place right here in West Vancouver:

  • National Indigenous Peoples Day at Ambleside Park, June 21: The District’s annual family-friendly celebration features cultural sharing through art, music, storytelling, and dance, with Canoe Families and activities on the beach, live music in the evening featuring Squamish Nation performers, and a salmon dinner cooked over an open fire. • Events and resources at the West Vancouver Memorial Library: Check out the Library’s many offerings to highlight and honour Indigenous History Month, including traditional tea making and a film screening. Find out more here.
  • Squamish Nation Youth Powwow, July 10–12: Enjoy a weekend of traditional food, vendors, and entertainment. Learn more at squamishnationyouthpowwow.com
